Services vCISO

vCISO Services

Not just a CISO. Your entire security team, working inside your company.

Most vCISO services rent you one part-time advisor who tells you what to do. We start by learning your business: what you sell, who you sell to, and what's slowing your growth. Then we build a security roadmap around those goals and do the work with you. You get a CISO who joins your team, backed by a dedicated security team picked from our bench of 45+ senior security leaders and engineers who ran security at Apple, Robinhood, and the NSA.

What do vCISO services include?

A vCISO (virtual or fractional chief information security officer) is a senior security leader who works for your company part-time instead of as a full-time hire. Most vCISO services stop there: one outside advisor recommending best practices. YSecurity goes further. Your CISO works as part of your team, builds a security roadmap around your business goals, and leads a dedicated team of security engineers, pen testers, cloud and AI security specialists, and compliance leads who carry it out. Security strategy, SOC 2 and ISO 42001, customer security reviews, incident readiness, and board reporting all get done by people who have done it at the highest level.

Why we offer more than vCISO services

If you searched for a vCISO, you're in the right place. Here's what the term usually means, and what you get from us instead.

What most vCISO services look like

  • A remote advisor who sits outside your team and checks in on a schedule
  • Advice based on general best practices, not on how your business works
  • Policies and a roadmap handed back to your engineers to carry out
  • Security treated as a cost to keep as low as possible
  • One person, often split across many other clients

How YSecurity works

  • A CISO who joins your Slack, stand-ups, and planning, and works as part of your team
  • We learn your business first: your customers, your deals, and your growth plans
  • A roadmap tied to those goals, starting with what's blocking revenue
  • We do the work: questionnaires, controls, cloud and code changes, and audits
  • Security that helps you win enterprise customers, pass diligence, and grow
  • A dedicated team behind your CISO that scales up or down with the work

Many people hear "virtual" and picture an outside contractor with little connection to the business. Our CISOs and engineers work inside your company, alongside your team.

Security questions founders ask before they call us

If one of these is on your plate right now, it's the kind of work your vCISO and security team take off it.

Who should own security at a startup?

Without a security leader, security usually lands on the CTO or a senior engineer, on top of their real job. A vCISO takes ownership of the program: the roadmap, the risk calls, and the answers customers and investors expect. Your dedicated security team does the hands-on work, so your engineers can stay on the product.

How do we answer a security questionnaire with no security team?

Your vCISO and team answer it with you, accurately, from how your company actually runs. Where an honest answer is "not yet," they help you fix the gap or explain the plan to the buyer. They also join the buyer's security call, so the deal doesn't stall waiting on you.

A customer wants SOC 2 before they'll sign. Where do we start?

Start with scoping: what the customer actually needs, Type 1 or Type 2, and which systems are in scope. Your vCISO owns the program while our compliance team runs controls, evidence, and the auditor. First-time clients typically reach SOC 2 Type 2 in about five months.

Our board and investors are asking about security. What do we tell them?

Tell them who owns it, what the top risks are, and what's being done about each one. Your vCISO builds that one-page security story, presents it to your board as your security leader, and keeps it current through diligence.

Should a startup hire a security engineer or a CISO first?

Often neither, yet. One engineer can't set strategy, and one CISO can't do the hands-on work alone. A vCISO with a dedicated security team gives you both, and you can hire full-time later, once you need someone to manage a security team in-house.

What should we do if we have a security incident?

Have a response plan before you need one: who decides, who talks to customers, and who fixes what. Your vCISO and team write the plan, run a tabletop exercise with your team, and lead the response if something happens.

What you get

01

A CISO on your team

A named security leader who joins your Slack, stand-ups, and planning. They learn how your business works and make the calls a CISO makes: what to fix first, what risk to accept, and what to tell your board and your customers.

02

A roadmap built around your business

Your security plan starts from your goals: the enterprise deals you're chasing, the audit a buyer is asking for, the round you're raising. Work is ranked by what it unblocks, so security helps you grow instead of slowing you down.

03

A dedicated team that does the work

Security engineers, pen testers, cloud and AI security specialists, and compliance leads, picked from our bench of 45+ senior people who ran security at Apple, Robinhood, and the NSA. They make the changes in your cloud and codebase, answer the questionnaires, join your buyer security reviews, and run the audits.

04

A full security team, billed by the hour

Billed in 15-minute increments with an optional monthly cap. No retainer, no long-term contract. One full-time CISO alone averages $415,000 in total compensation (IANS Research and Artico Search), before you hire a single engineer to work for them.

How it works

  1. 1

    Learn your business

Your first 6 hours are free.

We start with your business, not a checklist: what you sell, who's buying, and what's in the way right now, whether that's a buyer's questionnaire, a SOC 2 deadline, or a board asking about security. You get a written roadmap tied to those goals.

  2. 2

    Join your team

Contract within one business day of approval.

Your CISO joins your Slack and stand-ups from day one and brings in engineers and specialists as the roadmap calls for them.

  3. 3

    Do the work

Ongoing, sized to what you need.

Your team carries out the roadmap day to day: compliance, customer reviews, cloud and product fixes, and incident readiness. We scale up before an audit or a big deal, scale down when things are quiet, and update the roadmap as your goals change.

FAQs

vCISO Services questions, answered

How is this different from a typical vCISO?
A typical vCISO is one part-time, remote advisor who recommends best practices, writes policies, and hands the work back to your engineers. With YSecurity, your CISO works as part of your team, builds a roadmap around your business goals, and leads a dedicated team that carries it out: security engineers, pen testers, and compliance specialists, on the same fractional model.
Is a vCISO an outside advisor or part of our team?
It depends on the provider. "Virtual" often means a remote advisor who checks in on a schedule. At YSecurity, your CISO and team join your Slack, stand-ups, and planning, learn how your business works, and work alongside your engineers like any other part of your company.
What's the difference between a vCISO, a virtual CISO, and a fractional CISO?
They're three names for the same role: a senior security leader who works for your company part-time instead of as a full-time hire. "vCISO" is short for virtual CISO, and "fractional CISO" describes the same model. What varies between providers is what comes with the role. Most give you one advisor. At YSecurity, your vCISO comes with a dedicated security team. Read the founder's guide: What is a vCISO? →
What does a vCISO do?
A vCISO owns your security program: the strategy and roadmap, compliance like SOC 2 and ISO 42001, customer security reviews, vendor and AI risk, incident readiness, and board reporting. At YSecurity, your vCISO also leads a dedicated security team that does the hands-on work, from pen testing to cloud hardening to audit evidence.
What's the difference between a vCISO and an MSSP?
A vCISO is a security leader who owns your program and makes decisions with you. An MSSP (managed security service provider) runs specific operations, often 24/7 monitoring of your systems. Many companies use both. Your YSecurity vCISO sets the plan, and your team does the work or coordinates the providers you already use.
Does my startup need a CISO?
Most startups need CISO-level decisions well before they need a full-time CISO. The usual trigger is your first enterprise deal: a security questionnaire, a SOC 2 request, or a security call with the buyer. A vCISO gives you that leadership now, without a full-time executive hire.
How much do vCISO services cost?
We bill in 15-minute increments, and you set the monthly cap, so you never pay more than you've budgeted. No retainers, no minimums, no long-term contract. Your first 6 hours are free.
How fast can a vCISO start?
We send the contract within one business day of approval, and your vCISO joins your Slack and stand-ups from kickoff. Hiring a full-time security leader commonly takes three to six months before they start.
Do we need a vCISO or a full-time CISO?
Most startups need CISO-level judgment long before a full-time CISO makes financial sense. A practical signal to hire full-time is when fractional spend approaches $180,000 to $220,000 a year, or when you need someone to manage a team of security engineers. Until then, renting the whole team covers far more ground than one full-time hire.
Can we get SOC 2 without hiring a security person?
Yes, and it's one of the most common reasons startups bring us in. You don't need a security hire: your vCISO owns the program while our compliance team runs scoping, controls, evidence, and the auditor. First-time clients typically reach SOC 2 Type 2 in about five months.
Will our vCISO talk to our customers and our board?
Yes. Your vCISO joins buyer security calls, answers questionnaires, and presents to your board as your security leader.
You need a security department. You don't need to spend a year building one.
