What is agentic engineering?

Andrej Karpathy drew the line in February 2026: coding agents 'basically didn't work before December and basically work since.' Agentic Engineering questions, answered

Will this actually make us faster, or just produce more pull requests?
Both are possible, and the difference is the system around the agent. Faros AI's study of more than 10,000 developers found teams merging 98% more pull requests while review time rose 91% and company-level results didn't move. DORA's 2025 report put it plainly: AI amplifies what's already there. We design the whole workflow — context, tests, review, security, cost — so the speed shows up in shipped product rather than in a longer review queue.
Our codebase is old, huge, and undocumented. Isn't that the worst case for agents?
It's the best case for adoption done right. Agents are strongest when they have trustworthy context, so the first weeks go into making your estate legible — architecture notes, conventions, tests that mean something. That work compounds: every team that follows starts from a codebase agents can reason about. How do we keep an agent from doing something catastrophic?
By designing for it. The 2025 Replit incident — an agent deleting a production database during a code freeze — is the failure everyone pictures, and it's an architecture problem, not a model problem. Sandboxed execution, dev/prod separation, scoped credentials, protected branches, and an approval model that doesn't rely on a person catching every dangerous command (in Anthropic's test with 1,053 professional testers, human review caught 13.6% of dangerous commands) are standard in how we configure adoption.
